Okay, let's face it. New Year's resolutions suck. Really they do. You hardly ever accomplish them and at the end of the year when you drunkenly reflect on your failures, it just makes you feel more like crap than you already do or will soon be as you then start drinking again to drown our your sorrows. Anyhow.
Nonetheless, I always make it a list. I write it down on a post-it and I tape it to my mirror so that I can reflect on them while getting ready in the morning. Every year for some years now, I've been collecting my friends' resolutions as well and then emailing them out to everyone on the list so that we can each hold one another accountable (read: give each other sh*t about it the following NYE).
Last year I did away with the term "resolution" and instead replaced it with "goals", as in New Year's Goals. While the pain of not accomplishing those was somewhat less painful, it sucked anyways.
So, this year I've chosen yet another term -- "intention". Things that you will try to do. And, hey, you can look back on them on NYE 2007 and say "Hell, yeah, I tried to learn ancient Greek, tried to learn how to play the piano and tried to lose those 10 pounds! Woo-hoo!" And you can finally be at peace with your lazy-ass self.
Here are my intentions for 2006:
* Try to be more consciously aware and more present minded
* Try to finish my novel by my birthday (5.27)
* Try to be better at time management
* Try to cook more meals
* Try to start meditating
* Try to explore more of SF
* Try to be more physically active
and most importantly
* Try to be more CONSISTENT.
What are some of your intentions this year?

My resolution last year was to start meditating, I did and kept up at it. I didn't quite do the learn Portuguese and play the guitar again. 1 for 3.
I'm afraid of meditating...you might start to get attacked by evil entities.
My intention for 2006: Survive
One of them was to eat better. I thought I was doing well, like I've had a grilled salmon salad and some fruit and veggies. Broke that today with a quarter pounder and fries.
My list of idle intentions grows longer ever day. I've been all over the place with "resolutions" in the past, so this year my only intention is to just be myself, and try to fucking enjoy it.
try to be a good juggler...
Glad you're back!
Here's some recommendations for your reading. These are "thinking girl's" SF/magical realism choices:
"Mothers and Other Monsters" Maureen McHugh
"Stranger Things Happen" Kelly Link
"Cloud 8" Grant Bailie
McHugh is a long time buddy of mine. She was just nominated for the 2005 Story Prize for her collection. I reviewed it here.
My intentions for this year:
1. learn German
2. start my master's degree
3. practice my cello
4. plan early before going a on trip (I do last minute stuff!)
5. save!
I was going to make such a list and post on my blog, but didn't get around to it. So off the top of my head, here's a few:
1. QUIT procrastinating. All together, period. No extensions, no last minute assignments...Just git 'er all done.
2. Write my novel.
3. Win a major contest of some kind.
4. Read a lot more for the fun of it.
5. Go on a shopping spree. I've had little ones here and there, but not a good hefty one since about '00.
6. Pray more.
I haven't made any, but these sound good. I have BEEN wanting to do these.
* Try to be more consciously aware and more present minded
* Try to start meditating
* Try to be more physically active
Also, I'd like to read more books.
Hey, you ever heard Nick Hornby's HOW TO BE GOOD on tape? It was well read.
crallspace,
hi! I've never heard a book on tape but I hear that How to be Good is...well, good. So you liked it then?
Running: 1 out of 3 works.
Phoenix: lol.
Angel: You can have a salad tomorrow!
Jay: Good resolution. Don't let those Mormons boss you around!
Cathy: Thanks! Now by "juggling" do you mean time management or actual juggling?
Erin: okay...
Missy: That's a good list! Wow - you play cello!?
Aud: That is a really ambitious list!
I hate resolutions too. So this year I did:
"Things I'm looking forward to in 2006"
and
"Risks I will take in 2006".
The risks one was the most exciting... one of mine was to tell people whom I found attractive that I found them attractive. Regardless of where I saw them (i.e. on the street, on the tube, etc). I've already tried this one. Without success as yet, but all I've lost is a little pride....!
I'm such a procrastinator that I typically make my resolutions in February. I guess the upshot is that I only have to attempt to keep them for 11 months instead of 12. :)
The goal is to keep the year's intentions simple.
Two years ago, my goal was to make a pie. DONE.
Last year's goal was to make an edible pie. DONE.
This year's goal is to make something out of a cook book at least once a month. We have so many cookbooks, with beautiful recipes, but they are currently looking lovely on a bookshelf. That's it.
See?? Simple.
eat more, drink more, party more. you can't go wrong!
I have many of the same *intentions* as you...including meditating, cooking more (eating out less), finishing a novel, time management, etc..
Thanks for sharing! ;)
Yes, HOW TO BE GOOD is a good book on tape. Nick's female side tells the tale.
I used t be pretty into books on tape. Michael Moore's STUPID WHITE MEN was another good'n.
1. Finish novel, comme Missy and Anhoni.
2. Start my master's degree.
3. Keep learning French.
4. Go back to Paris and get stuffed on bread and cheese, because the eating right resolution is so cliche.
5. Hook up with my shy/gorgeous guy friend
We have something in common, because we both want to be more consistent.
Mine is to be open to the moment, and by that I mean to not let things get in the way of what I want (guess that could kind of be present minded?).
They are all good goals for the year, although I'm not sure about 'meditating' - I really don't think I'd have the patience for it.
But it works for some people I suppose!
may i suggest, not to critisize, that your intentions be less "try" and more "do"? That may help the idea of improving oneself, its more of a solid goal know what i mean?
My goals this year:
*continue my healthy work out habits
*get over the last years worth of relationship drama, now that its really is over
*save more money
*prep for my life outside the military (year and a half left, i hope)
*keep a good head on my shoulders
*make it to 2007 without yet another broken heart (please, the poor guy needs a vacation)
DM: You're 20. Wait till you calm down. Then you might want to meditate. ;) .
Nice Guy: Did you read the post? The whole "do" thing doens't work for me in this respect. Which is why I chose intentions instead. A lot more motivational and do-able.
Thank you!
